Doctor: Heavier Women Should Avoid Low-Dose Birth Control
KXAS-TV 11:00 a.m. CST February 15, 2007 Birth control pills help prevent pregnancy, but the low dose variety might not be as effective for heavy women, a local expert said. Baylor Obstetrician/Gynecologist Dr. Richard Salter said overweight women might need a pill that delivers a higher dose of hormones.
Salter said fat cells could absorb hormones, preventing them from reaching the area of the brain that tells the ovaries to ovulate.
He said that women taking low dose pills should take them at the exact same time every day.
The Food and Drug Administration reports that an increase in pregnancy rates may be caused by lower hormone doses and "heavier subjects," NBC 5 reported.
Women taking low dose pills face fewer risks of blood clots, NBC 5 reported.
